In the Best of Class, 13-to-19-year old category, there were three single malt whiskies – all storied names in the history of Scotch whisky. The whisky is very peaty and smoky on the nose, accompanied by slightly fruity notes. Historically, it was heavily peated – a style which is retained to this day. Port Charlotte was a historic Islay whisky brand that was purchased and resurrected by the Bruichladdich Distillery. The finish is long and sweet, with lingering fruit notes. ![]() It’s light, sweet and fruity on the palate, exhibiting tropical fruit and citrus notes. On the nose, the whisky is floral and fruity. The Roman numerals on the label depict the date 1494, the year whisky was allegedly produced at the abbey. This is one of Scotland’s newest distilleries and is named for the Lindores Abbey – the site where, it’s believed, malt whisky was first produced in Scotland. Fife is about an hour directly north of Edinburgh. Lindores, MCDXCIV, Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 46% ABV, 750 ml is a lowland whisky produced in Fife at the Lindores Distilling Company. It offers up pronounced tropical fruit notes on the palate, with hints of licorice. The whisky is floral and fruity and slightly waxy on the nose. Glengarry, Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 12 YO, 40% ABV, 750 ml is a Highland Scotch produced by the Loch Lomond distillery in Alexandria in Dunbartonshire. There were three contenders in the Best of Class Distiller’s Single Malt Scotch Up to 12 Years. There is dried fruit with a bit of well-seasoned wood on the palate, along with wood spices. The whisky is smoky and earthy on the nose. In the case of Uigeadail, the Sherry influences are noticeable but subtle, since only a portion of the whisky in the final blend gets Sherry cask maturation. The finish is long, with lingering dried dark fruit and tropical fruit notes.Īrdbeg Uigeadail exhibits the classic Ardbeg profile of smoky, medicinal and slightly savory notes, accompanied by the dark fruits notes typical of Sherry cask maturation. There are hints of cinnamon, a bit of clove and a persistent pepperiness. It’s sweet and smooth on the palate, with dried dark fruits and tropical fruit notes. ![]()
